Bradly I do some voluntary work side effect of vydox But I’m not convinced that the problem is the consultant cover. Sure, five consultants in the entire country sounds ludicrous, but only if you don’t understand the function of A&E or how it operates. The majority of problems that present to A&E are straightforward and don’t require a consultant’s input. Casualty doctors therefore act as a triage, signposting patients to the appropriate speciality when needed, treating and discharging others. For the genuine emergencies – the life-saving, blue lights‑blazing, drop-everything situations – there is a dedicated crash team. This comprises senior surgeons, anaesthetists and medics as well as the casualty doctors. So a lack of consultant cover at night time is not the reason for the current problems in A&E.
