A keen swimmer, she spent many happy hours in the river Coquet in Northumberland. She was later appointed captain of the Durham county netball team. Her early ambition was to be a PE teacher, but her mother did not consider this an appropriate career; and when she arrived home after a summer spent with her twin cousins Jack and Harold on their farm at East Ardsley, West Yorkshire, dressed in her uncle’s riding breeches, she was strongly encouraged to attend a secretarial course in Darlington. |
