Now that that is no longer in place, we naturally want to work closely with both businesses and individuals to see how we can bring the programme back to life to again celebrate the astonishing impact that people are having on the arts in their community and the pride they take in such impact. This sense of local pride is important. We are lucky in this country to have a broad spectrum of arts organisations that were originally set up in the last period of grand cultural philanthropy, the Victorian era, when business people recognised that a mark of a great city or an energised county was the presence of galleries, museums and theatres that both told a local story and were proud beacons of a national infrastructure of cultural provision (something some local councils today might pause to consider). |
